Know you belong

You might be feeling nervous about college. Spoiler alert: Your peers are, too!  This is a new experience for everyone. It may take time to feel totally comfortable, and that’s okay. Read on to explore some ways to make the most out of your college experience.

Make the most of your independence

  • Prioritize classes that are required for your major or general credits. Schedule other classes around them.
  • Sign up for classes as early as possible each semester. Having the course codes and login ready for the exact time class registration opens will help you get the classes you want.
  • Check each syllabus. Track test and quiz dates to look for conflicts and make sure you are prepared.
  • Let professors know about time conflicts as soon as possible. The earlier you share them, the more flexible most professors will be.
  • It can be tempting to skip class, but that can snowball. Hold yourself accountable for attending every class whether attendance is required or not.

Set yourself up for academic and professional success

  • Try to keep up with assignments and skills, even if you’re not yet being tested on them.
  • Join a study group or visit the tutoring center.
  • Use stress management techniques during busy study times or exams.
  • Go to office hours. You can ask your professors questions about class, about their experience, or about the area of study.
  • When you have a positive experience with a professor, reach out to them. Ask for advice on careers, internships, or other opportunities. Make these requests short and include a compliment or two!
  • Many professors express themselves or their passions in inspiring ways. Even if their area of study isn’t your focus, take note of these attributes and attend these office hours as well.

Be open to new experiences and perspectives

  • Seek out friendships and study groups with students from backgrounds different than yours. You can learn and share a lot!
  • Many student groups will have cultural events, clubs, and activities. Attending some of these events can be great learning experiences.

Explore your new surroundings

  • Plan to attend campus events like your student activity fair. It’s a great way to get to know your campus, meet new people, and explore student organizations!
  • As you get to know campus, you’ll find out what your interests are and build them into your routine. But don’t feel pressure to “do it all.” If you’re feeling overwhelmed the first few weeks of college, reach out to your college’s student services or mental health services for resources.
