Math and Science Scholars Loan Repayment Program

Purpose of the program

The Math and Science Scholars Loan Repayment Program is meant to encourage teachers who perform well as math or science majors to teach math or science.  

How to apply

To complete an application, use the Math and Science Scholars LRP online form. You will need:  

  • An official copy of your transcript from the institution from which you graduated 
  • Information about your student loan balances, account numbers, and loan holders 
  • The email address for your Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). Your CAO may be your principal, assistant principal, human resources representative authorized to verify employment, or superintendent. After you have submitted your application, we will email an employment verification form to your CAO.  

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible, a teacher must: 

  • Have completed an undergraduate or graduate program in math or science 
  • Have earned a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a four-point scale 
  • Be certified under the Texas Education Code to teach math or science in a Texas public school 
  • Be teaching in the classroom full time as a math or science teacher in a public school 
  • Have taught as a full-time classroom mathematics or science teacher for at least one year in a Title I school at the time of application for enrollment in the program 
  • Be a U.S. citizen 
  • Submit a completed application, including an official transcript from the college from which the applicant graduated, to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board by the application deadline 

Award amount

Up to $10,000 

*If any of the last four years of the required eight years of service are not completed at a Title I Texas public school, the award maximum is reduced to up to 75%. 

Eligible loans

The following apply for a loan to be eligible for repayment: 

  • There must be a promissory note which required the loan to be used to pay for educational expenses for undergraduate or graduate education 
  • Must not be in a default status at the time of application 
  • Must not have an existing obligation to provide service for loan forgiveness through another program. 

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to commit to eight years of service? 

  • Yes, this program requires a commitment of eight years, the first four of which must be at a Title 1 public school in the state of Texas. 

What is considered a full-time classroom teacher? 

  • Teaching a minimum of four hours a day in the eligible subject.
