Going back to school as an adult
“It’s going to be odd going back to class and sitting in a classroom with young people, but it’s all good. If I want to take my game to another level, I have to go back to school and get that education, for my own development.”
Jorge Savala, Friends of Santa Cruz, CA State Parks
What happens next?
After you submit your application and all other required documents, the college or program will decide on your admission.
Community colleges have open enrollment, meaning that everyone who applies is admitted and can attend.
Four-year universities are typically more competitive and will consider your application, high school record (class rank), any college credit (if applying as a transfer), essays (if applicable), test scores (if applicable), and other criteria. Many have certain criteria for automatic or guaranteed admission. If you do not meet the automatic standards, then you will be considered through a holistic review. In a holistic review process, the university considers you as a whole individual. It considers your strength of high school coursework, academic and extracurricular interests, unique talents and personality.
Some universities also have alternate pathways for admission, such as co-enrollment programs or guaranteed transfer programs.
